Screenplay is everything: Udaykrishna

Scriptwriter duo Udaykrishna and Siby K Thomas need no introduction. They are wellknown for those high octane, noisy and splashy entertainers in Mollywood.

Now, Udaykrishna has independently written the script for superhit movie ‘Pulimurugan’. Basking in the glory of “Pulimurugan’, Uday sees a bright road ahead for Malayalam film industry.

But, the duo have always faced accusations of serving ‘old wine in new bottles’. Many of their ‘masala entertainers’ are actually rehashed versions of those age old cliched tales. Ask Uday about this and he will come up with an explanation for it.

“Have you observed title cards of old movies ? There was nothing called ‘screenplay’, back then. Later, ‘screenplay’ started appearing along with ‘story’. This is when people started realising its importance. So, screenplay is what makes an age old tale appear fresh.

For example, Chanthu is a warrior mentioned in the folk songs of Northern Kerala.People were familiar with his story as it was narrated repeatedly by many generations, Still, when megastar ‘Mammootty’ portrayed ‘Chanthu’ in ‘Oru Vadakkan Veeragaadha’, it was perceived as a fresh story. This is the magic of script. The same thing is true with ‘Vaishaali’, he said in an interview given to Rashtradeepika Cinema magazine.

“Basically, cinema is a visual art. It is a wonder. Its objective is to astonish viewers and even dialogues are not needed for this. Screenplay is the key”, he opined.
