GST effect: Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac warns of strict action against traders for hiking prices

(Thiruvanthapuram,July 08, 2017):On Friday, Kerala Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac said that 'stringent action' will be taken against traders for hiking prices of essential commodities.

Isaac said, "The government will not permit traders to levy more than the MRP (Maximum Retail Price) from consumers. The officials will conduct raids to identify overcharging traders."

He further added that the price of several commodities have come down since GST came into effect. The cost of commodities sold through Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) outlets has marginally scaled down.

Isaac also mentioned that GST has not been levied on chicken and it have should be sold at only Rs 87 per kilo from Monday onwards. Isaac also agrees that inflating the price of cinema ticket fare in the name of GST is unreasonable.

Earlier, Kerala Finance Minister TM Thomas Isaac has written a letter to his counterpart at the Cenre, Arun Jaitley, and claimed that though prices of many commodities had come down due to GST, the consumer was not getting its benefit.

He alleged, "It has been noticed hotels and restaurants and outlets selling daily consumables instead of giving discounts because of reduction of tax or at least keeping price at the same level had increased the prices." He further pointed out, "The hotel and restaurant industry has added 12-18 per cent GST tax on the price of food fixed in the pre-GST scenario."

"This has resulted in drastic increase in the cost of food items creating a negative impression on GST among people," he concluded.
