Kalabhavan Mani's mysterious death: CBI steps in finally

(May 18, 2017): CBI has agreed to take up the case of actor Kalabhavan Mani's unexpected death, following the order given out by the high court last month to the agency.

Earlier, Mani’s wife Nimmi and brother RLV Ramakrishnan had submitted a petition at the high court saying that there are mysterious circumstances surrounding Mani’s death and that a CBI probe was necessary. Also, the state government had handed over the case to the CBI but the investigating agency was not ready to take up the case. The CBI defended their stance saying that there were no apparent mysterious circumstances surrounding Mani’s death and also that they are currently understaffed to deal with all the cases pending with them.

However, the medical committee appointed by the state government had earlier found out that Mani died due to the intake of methyl alcohol, but were unable to find out how it got into Mani’s body. It’s not clear whether it was suicide or murder. The HC sought clarity regarding this.

Mani was found dead at his outhouse ‘Paadi’, close to his house, on March 6, 2016.
