Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued precautionary measures for public in light of the water release from Idukki Dam. The water is released via Cheruthoni dam shutters.

Directions have been issued to people, not to panic or spread fake news once the dam shutters are opened. The authorities also warn the people living in the areas that were flood affected when Idamalayar Dam was opened in 2013.

* People must not rush to places like Vazhathopp, Mariyapuram, Kanjikkuzhy, Vathikudi and Konnathadi of Idukki district to witness the shutter opening.
* People should not gather on the river banks and bridges. Avoid selfies.
* Avoid bathing, washing clothes etc in the river.
* Do not try to cross the river once the shutters are raised.
* Important documents, jewellery and other valuables must be kept in a plastic bag. Place it in a height that is easily accessible.
* Carefully follow the warnings issued by officials through radio and TV. Share all the updates with your family members.
* If the water enters your building, immediately switch off the main switch.
* Save the contact numbers of local body officials.
* Take special care in the case of elderly people, children and differently abled people. Incase you need special aid consult the nearby police station.
* Keep electrical appliances at a good height.
* Shift domestic animals to a safe place or release them as they can swim.
* Donot park your vehicles in the basement.
* Only trained people should participate in the rescue operation. Others can help them.
