Sister Rani Maria becomes 'Blessed'
(Indore, Nov 4, 2017, DG): Sister Rani Maria, the Malayali nun who was cruelly murdered here back in 1995, was beatified on Saturday.

Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, from the Vatican presided over the beatification ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by all four Indian Cardinals, the Apostolic Nuncio to India, nearly 50 Bishops and hundreds of priests, nuns and Christian devotees.

Sister Rani Maria Vattalil was a member of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation. She was cruelly murdered in broad day light inside a bus at Indore on February 25, 1995.

The nun, a post-graduate in Sociology was involved in social work among the tribals. Her works empowered tribals against exploitation by wealthy money lenders.

Following this, she was brutally stabbed to death by a professional killer hired by these money lenders.

The Beatification is a declaration by the Pope that the nun had died a martyr's death and had ascended to heaven. Vatican had cleared her beatification on March 23. With the official declaration coming out today, she will now be referrred to as 'Blessed'.
