10 naxals surrender in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Sep 22 (PTI) As many as 10 naxals surrendered in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh today citing disappointment with the "hollow" Maoist ideology, police said.

The cadres turned themselves in before senior police and administration officials at the Bastar district headquarters, located around 300 kms away from here.

The community policing initiative 'Amcho Bastar, Amcho Police' (Our Bastar, Our Police) of police that focused on rehabilitation of naxal cadres has been yielding better results, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Dantewada range) Sundarraj P told PTI.

"The surrendered ultras, in their statements, expressed disappointment with hollow Maoist ideology and violence committed by them," he said.

Besides, they also said that they were impressed with the efforts being made under the community policing campaign, he added.

According to the officer, eight janmilitia members, one member each of jantana sarkar and Chetna Natya Mandli (CNM)- a cultural wing of Maoists, are among the surrendered.

They all belonged to Darbha division of Maoists, which has been instrumental in executing several deadly naxal attacks in south Bastar, the DIG said.

All of them were tasked with arranging ration, convening meeting of villagers for their senior colleagues, passing information about the movement of police and others, he added.

Cash of Rs 10,000 was given to each surrendered rebel as encouragement money, the DIG said adding that all of them will be facilitated as per the surrender and rehabilitation policy.

As per the policy, the surrendered cadres are provided training in different skills, including masonry, at the state-run livelihood colleges. Some of them are also given jobs as security guards in the government-run establishments, he added.
