Election Commission sends notice to Rahul Gandhi for ‘violating model code of conduct’
(NEW DELHI, Dec 13, 2017):The Election Commission issued a show cause notice to Congress president-elect Rahul Gandhi for "prima facie" violating the model code by giving interviews to TV channels in Gujarat where polls are due on Thursday.

EC also asked its officials in Gujarat to file a first investigation report against regional news channels who aired the interview on Wednesday. The poll body further directed the concerned news channels to desist from airing such interviews before the polling process in Gujarat is completed.

The second round of polls will take place on December 14. According to the EC directive, the Chief Electoral Officer of Gujarat has been asked to initiate necessary action, following violation of Section 126 (1) (b) of The Representation of the People Act, 1951, by regional channels that aired the interview.

The EC directive has not named any of the channels. The model code of conduct places a bar on directly addressing voters or influencing them after the end of the campaigning phase.

The EC action followed a complaint from the state unit of BJP on Wednesday that said airing the interview had violated the model code of conduct. The second and final phase of polling in Gujarat is scheduled for Thursday across 93 constituencies and campaigning had ended on Tuesday evening.
