Malayalam lyricist and poet Rajeev Alunkal is elated as the date of Mother Teresa's canonization draws near. His poem titled 'Theresamma' will be presented to Pope Francis on the big day. The poet considers it as one among the many miracles that happened throughout his career. It is an honour to Malayalam language and poetry, he said in a special interview to Deepika website. Music and singing departments are handled by Reju Joseph.
The poem was first published in Sahithyaposhini magazine, edited by Chunakkara Janardhanan Nair. Bishop Dr. Joshua Ignathios, Chunakkara's friend, noticed it and took initiative to take it to Vatican. Bishop will present it to Pope Francis on September 4.
Transcending linguistic barriers
Rajeev has translated it into English too. It will also have translations in Bengali, Tamil, Hindi, Albenian and Italian. Sister Jolka Pajetri has penned the Albenian version while Italian version was done by Sister Georgina Nedumparambil. On September 3, Usha Uthup will sing the English version at Sant'Andrea della Valle basilica. Vatican radio is broadcasting the poem on a regular basis, he sums up.
