Saint Theresa of Calcutta gets a wax avatar in Kerala

(Oct 18, 2016, DG): Baby Alex from Kottayam district in Kerala is busy giving final touches to a wax statue. Mother Teresa of Kolkata has taken rebirth in Baby’s mastery.

The wrinkes on that face and expressions are all adeptly reproduced by this artist. Upon completion, it will be taken to Velankanny church. As she was declared a saint recently, Vice Rector of Velakanny church, Fr. Susai Manikyam had requested Baby to design a wax statue for the church.

Baby had to travel a lot to get the right clothes for this statue. Also, he couldn’t find those special chappals used by Mother in any shop. The cross attached to her dress was also unavailable. Finally, he had to design these things alone. Crafting those glittering eyes in fiberglass was another challenge he faced.

There are only four wax statue makers in India. In Kerala, there are just two people including Baby Alex. He is the man behind more than 20 statues in Kanyakumari’s Baywatch wax museum. He was in the news few months back for making Ex Kerala CM Oommen Chandy’s wax statue.

Magician Gopinath Muthukad’s statue is almost done and in coming days this work will keep him occupied, and that is not all. Celebrities like Nayanthara, AR Rahman, Shreya Ghoshal, Kamalhaasan and Sonia Gandhi are all waiting for their wax avatar. Busy days ahead for the master!
