Nitish Kumar Now Says Demonetisation Was A 'Monumental Mismanagement'

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who had peviously heaped praise on the government’s demonetisation move, on Friday agreed with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who had said that demonetisation was a monumental mismanagement.

“Dr Manmohan Singh saying that demonetisation was monumental mismanagement was right. The Centre has to tell us what the benefit of it was. They cannot divert the issue. When nowhere in the world cashless or less cash economy has worked, how will it work in a country like India?” said Nitish Kumar, speaking at an event in Delhi.

After the Prime Minister’s announcement that ?500 and ?1000 notes will not be considered legal tender, Bihar Chief Minister had praised the move, stating that it would help in the fight against black money.

"This 'notebandi' is a positive step which will lead to benefits. It will happen,” Nitish had said.

Justifying the change in his stand, Nitish said that now it was time to ask from the Centre what the results of the move were.

“We had not immediately opposed demonetisation because we thought it is a step towards eradication of black money. Now it's been a while. Now we must set everything aside and ask, how much black money was recovered and when will corruption be hit? What is the roadmap?” asked Nitish.

Speaking at the event marking the launch of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Nitish Kumar added that the country needs “maximum unity” in the Opposition

“We need maximum opposition unity. No need to fear, it's the job of the opposition to raise its voice. Who will be scared of these people?” Nitish said.
