Congress gets ready for organisation elections
With the All India Congress Committee (AICC) announcing its organisational election schedule on Wednesday, Congress leaders here are getting ready to hold a similar exercise that would hopefully usher in a generation change in the top leadership.

Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala is expected to leave for New Delhi on Friday for discussions with the party high command and other senior leaders are also expected to be in the national capital soon to work out the probable dates for holding the organisation elections from the boothlevel upwards.

The AICC proposes to complete membership subscription by May 15 and hold the election from booth level to the post of AICC president, to be completed by October 30. This will be followed by a plenary session where the new AICC president will assume office.

The new election dates have been announced on the basis of the Election Commission’s decision giving extension till December 31 for the Congress to hold its organisation elections.

The State is likely to witness a comprehensive election process being implemented from the boothlevel upwards. The resignation of V.M. Sudheeran as KPCC president has now forced the party high command to think about a generation shift in the leadership. The election dates in the State will be almost synchronous with the AICC programme, with some minor variations. The AICC is expected to issue the detailed election schedule for the booth, mandalam, block, district and State levels and also for the election of AICC members.

The only issue that needs to be decided is the manner in which the KPCC president is to be selected. Earlier, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had demanded a comprehensive organisation polls when Mr. Sudheeran was at the helm. The demand was the outcome of a cold war between the two leaders. It is not known whether Mr. Chandy has changed his stand since Mr. Sudheeran’s resignation.

The AICC has announced that there will not be any change in the returning officers who had been designated to various States. Sudarshan Nachiappan, senior Tamil Nadu Congress leader, will be the returning officer for Kerala.
