Difference between JEE Main Syllabus & JEE Advanced: Read to know more

(Feb 8, 2018): JEE Main is conducted by CBSE for admission in B.E, B.Tech, and B.Arch courses in top engineering colleges across the country. Candidate’s result of JEE Main is the eligibility criteia for JEE Advanced, the examination that enables the candidate to get enrolled in IITs, NITs, CFTIs and IIITs.

Both the engineering examinations are objective type and are meant for candidates seeking admission in top colleges offering technical education. However, there is a slight difference in the syllabus for both the stages. Let’s discuss the same in brief.

Syllabus Difference in JEE Main and JEE Advanced

Candidates need to prepare for both the exams individually as the topics covered differ for each stage. To clear this distinction, we have discussed the topics candidates are tested upon in each exam.

Topics included in Physics Section of JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced

Electronic Devices: Logic gates (OR, NOT, NAND, AND, AND NOR). Semiconductors; semiconductor diode: I-V characters in forward and reverse bias: diode as a rectifier; I-V characteristics of LED, photodiode, solar cell and diode; Zener diode as a voltage regulator. Transistor as a switch. Transistor action, junction transistor, characteristics of a transistor: transistor as an amplifier and oscillator.

Communication Systems: Amplitude and Frequency Modulation; Basic elements of a communication system (only Block Diagram); Electromagnetic Waves Propagation; Bandwidth of signals & transmission medium.

Electromagnetic waves: Electromagnetic Waves; Characteristics of Electromagnetic Waves, Electromagnetic Spectrum, Transverse nature of electromagnetic Waves; Application of Electromagnetic Waves.

Topics covered in Physics Section of JEE Advanced but not JEE Main

Thermal Physics: Absorptive and Emissive powers; Newton’s law of cooling; Kirchhoff’s law, Displacement law; Stefan’s Law; Blackbody radiation.

Topics covered in Mathematics Section of JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced

Statistics and probability: Calculation of mean, median and mode. Mode of Grouped and ungrouped data, calculation of standard deviation, mean deviation and variance for grouped and ungrouped data; Measures of Dispersion.

Sets, Relations and Functions: Sets and their representations; union, intersection, complement of sets and their algebraic properties; types of relations, equivalence relations
Mathematical Reasoning: Logical operations, statements and, or, implied by, implies, if and only if. Understanding of contradiction, tautology, converse, and contra positive.

Trigonometry: Distances and Heights

Topics covered in Chemistry Section of JEE main but not in JEE Advanced

Everyday life Chemistry: Chemicals in food- Artificial sweetening agents, preservatives. Chemicals in medicines- Antimicrobials, analgesics, antibiotics, disinfectants, antacids, tranquilizers, antiseptics. Cleansing agents- Detergent and soaps, cleansing actions
Biomolecules: Nucleic acid- chemical construction of RNA and DNA; Vitamins- functions and classifications

Topics covered in Chemistry Section of JEE Advanced but not in JEE Main

Nuclear chemistry: Property of alpha, beta and gamma rays; Radioactivity; Carbon dating, Kinetics of radioactive decay; Discussion on fission and fusion reactions; Stability of nuclei with respect to proton-neutron ratio.

General Differences Between Main and Advanced Stages of IIT JEE

The very first difference is based on the bodies conducting the two exams. JEE Advanced is conducted by the IITs on a rotational basis whereas JEE Main is conducted by the CBSE.
Clearing JEE Main exam leads the candidates to appear in JEE Advanced; whereas clearing JEE Advanced will lead the candidates to get enrolled in B.E or B.Tech. courses in IITs, NITs, CFTIs and IIITs.

JEE Main is further divided in two papers where Paper 1 is for the candidates seeking admission in B.E or B.Tech courses, while Paper 2 is for the candidates seeking admission in B.Planning and B.Arch courses. Candidates get the option of attempting Paper 1 via both online and offline modes but Paper 2 can be only attempted offline. However, while applying for JEE Advanced, a candidate is required to specify whether they want to attempt for Paper 1, Paper 2, or both.

JEE Main can be attempted 3 times consecutively, while, JEE Advanced can only be attempted for 2 years in a row.
