Meet the man behind the wild hunt

(Oct 14, 2016, DG): Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s ‘Pulimurugan’ is running in packed houses in Kerala and outside. Malayalees have lapped up the wild hunter whose thrilling adventures were brought onscreen in a budget of 30 crores.

A decade ago, when Tamil movie ‘Annyan’ kicked up a tremendous response among Kerala youth, its 30 crore plus budget was cited as one among the reasons. Malayalam industry can never even dream of investing such a huge sum into one movie, it was believed back then. But, today Mollywood has a producer named Tomichan Mulakupadam who has bravely achieved this feat and the result is a world class movie that is waiting to be dubbed into not just Tamil and Telugu, but English,Chinese and Vietnamese.

Along the tiger’s trail

‘Pulimurugan’ was initially planned in a budget of 14 crores. Tomichan had introduced director Vysaakh through mass entertainer ‘Pokkiriraja’ with Mammootty and Prithviraj in lead roles. After the grand victory of this movie, he wanted to join hands with Vysaakh to repeat the success with a similar masala flick. But, Tomichan wanted it with Mohanlal this time.

Peter’s entry and inspiring words

It was action director Peter Hein’s entry that changed the way Tomichan looked at ‘Pulimurugan’. Think out of the box and forget that it's a Malayalam movie, was Peter’s advice. After this, Tomichan decided to give it all he had. Perfection was the only thing he wanted. And the result is a product that can match foreign movies. “Four crores were spent on visual effects alone. Firefly, who did the visual effects of ‘Bahubali’ was roped in for murugan. You can see the result of these efforts in each and every frame”, says a confident Tomichan.

Way to go!

When ‘Pulimurugan’ sets a benchmark in Malayalam film industry, this producer undoubtedly deserves a share of those whistles and claps echoing in Kerala’s theatres. “Just because our industry is small, our dreams don’t have to be”, director Vysaakh once said when asked about ‘Pulimurugan’. Tomichan Mulakupadam is a producer who has understood those words. Way to go, Mollywood!
